ROCKINGHAM – Reigning track champions Michael Smith and Allen Furr of Clinton are expected to be among those taking advantage of the free entry aspect of this week’s annual Racers Appreciation Bracket Shootout at Rockingham Dragway.

The event will crown champions on both Saturday and Sunday in Top ET, Footbrake and Jr. Dragster categories. Rockingham Dragway was one the first tracks to waive the entry fee beginning in 1994 when 700 racers showed up at the inaugural. Drivers only pay the basic admission fee. Adult admission is $35 for both days or $20 for Sunday only.

Daily winners in Top ET will earn $2,000 with $1,000 to the Footbrake champions and $150 to the Jr. Dragster winners.

Last year Buddy Dial won both Top ET races, taking home $4,000, while Ricky Bulloch and Furr won each day’s Footbrake race. Lane Morgan won Saturday’s Jr. Dragster class with Zuccarelli winning on Sunday.

“We’re as anxious as the bracket racers (to return to competition),” Dragway owner Steve Earwood said. “The Racers’ Appreciation Event is exactly what it says it is. We couldn’t exist without a strong corps of local racers supporting us and we certainly recognize that fact. This is a chance to give back a little.”

The event signals the official start of the 2019 drag racing season and will feature early parking on Friday with initial time trials beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The next major bracket race is the TOP ET Challenge, paying $10,000 on March 29, $20,000 on March 30, and another $10,000 on March 31.
