WADESBORO – The Hamlet Middle School softball team survived a furious seventh-inning rally by the Anson Lady Bearcats to come away with a 7-6 road win in Wadesboro on Wednesday.

The Lady Red Rams had been outscored by Anson 39-9 in their last four meetings, so the victory was a huge statement for a Hamlet squad that is eyeing a conference title.

Hamlet (2-0) got on the board first courtesy of a 2-RBI single by Katie Way in the top of the first inning.  Way later came home on a passed ball to give the visitors an early 3-0 lead.

The Lady Red Rams were set up for success in the top of the second inning after Anson pitcher Cierra Lear issued three straight walks to load the bases with no outs.  Ryelan Lyerly took advantage of the opportunity when she blasted the ball into right field for a 2-RBI double.

Quston Leviner added one more to the board when she plated Peyton Lowery with a sacrifice fly to give Hamlet a 6-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, Leviner hit a one-out double and then stole third base on the very next pitch.  Christi Jacobs brought Leviner home with a well-executed sacrifice bunt for Hamlet’s seventh and final run of the game.

Anson (3-1) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and three more in the seventh, but its rally ended up one run short.

Leviner earned her second win of the season in the circle.  She gave up six runs on five hits and walked five, but recorded 16 strikeouts.

Way ended the afternoon 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.  Lyerly was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.  Leviner and Jacobs each recorded an RBI.

Hamlet will return to the diamond on Monday at Ellerbe at 4pm.

Hamlet baseball completes sweep over Anson

WADESBORO – On Wednesday afternoon, Hamlet Middle School’s baseball team completed the sweep of the two middle school teams from Anson County.  The Red Rams followed up last week’s 9-2 home victory over Anson Blue with a 6-3 road win against Anson Orange in Wadesboro.

The pitching duo of Ethan Locklear and Jabari Douglas got the job done on the mound for Hamlet.  Locklear pitched four complete innings giving up no runs and striking out six batters.

A couple of errors during Douglas’ time on the mound allowed Anson to score three late runs and cut Hamlet’s six-run lead in half.  Douglas and the Red Ram defense regrouped to preserve the win.

Locklear (2-for-3), Jason Walker (1-for-2, RBI), Blake Brown (1-for-2, RBI) and Douglas (1-for-4) all contributed at the plate for the Red Rams.

Hamlet (2-0) will return to action on Monday when both teams travel to Ellerbe to take on the Wildcats.  First pitch will be at 4 p.m.
