HAMLET – The Rockingham Middle School Lady Rockets volleyball team showed “teamwork” in its match versus biggest in-county rival, Hamlet Middle School. Rockingham won both matches of the double-header 2-0 by the scores of scores of 25-14, 25-9 and 25-21, 25-7.

Hamlet, which had defeated both of its opponents last week, had a bumpy start, and continued throughout both matches. Starters for the Red Rams were Quston Leviner, Kaitlyn Huff, Ellie Buck, Kiersten Gibson, Erial Norton, and Katie Way; while Rockingham sent Madison Jenkins, Allyiah Swiney, Kenleigh Frye, E.J. Davis, Catherine Dennis, and Joy Styles to the net.

Hamlet head coach Alex Gardner acknowledged that her team seemed nervous from the start, which seems to be a trend when playing the Lady Rockets. There were times when the Lady Red Rams’ natural talent shined, but their nerves got the best of them.

Rockingham head coach Teresa Mason submitted these scores for her players:

Allyiah Swiney: 25 points

Madison Jenkins: 19 points

E. J. Davis: 17 points

Kenleigh Frye: 15 points

Catherine Dennis: 14 points

Joy Styles-10 points

Gardner noted that while there many mistakes the girls had just as many bright spots. There was more competitive volleys back and forth between teams as well as more opportunities for attacks, kills, and digs.

“Every game I see more and more potential from my team. I know we can go all the way if we get out of our own heads.” says Hamlet Red Rams coach Alex Gardner.

The Red Rams will travel to Anson Orange and face the Lady Bearcats Thursday at 4 p.m. Rockingham will be at home to host Anson Blue at 4 p.m.
