RAEFORD — Kicking off its first two-match week of the season, the Lady Raider golf team again showed major improvements Monday at Bayonet at Puppy Creek Golf Course.

Just a week after seeing five of its six players shoot season-low rounds, the Richmond Senior High School girls’ golf team followed up with its best combined nine-hole score. The match, which was hosted by Hoke County High School, saw the top four Lady Raiders’ score total come in at 217 (+73).

That was two strokes better than last week’s performance, as again the Sandhills Athletic Conference match was shortened to nine holes instead of the customary 18-hole round. Richmond head coach Keith Parsons noted the weather and course conditions aided in his players’ success.

“Scoring conditions were perfect today, thanks to the weather and the course setup,” Parsons explained. “I’m so impressed we took advantage to post our best score of the season.

“Everyone continues to get better, which is always the goal in any sport,” he added. “I look forward to seeing how we build on that Wednesday at Scotch Meadows.”

Senior No. 1 golfer Hailey Miller continued her hot streak, taking two more strokes off her scorecard from last week. She finished with a team-low round score of 41 (+5), as she continues to improve ahead of the regional tournament.

In the No. 2 slot for Richmond on Monday was sophomore Kenleigh Frye, who shot a season-best 51 (+15) during her round. That mark was four strokes less than her outing at Foxfire last week.

The other two golfers to see her score count in the final team tally were junior Delany Driggers (62) and sophomore Kirsten McDonald (63). Junior Angeli Yang wasn’t far off with a round score of 65.

Pinecrest High School continued to dominate the course of play, rolling to its fifth-straight win Monday with a team score of 146 (+2). Jack Britt (172) and Purnell Swett (196) high schools finished second and third, respectively. Behind the Lady Raiders were Scotland (232) and Lumberton (263) high schools.

Parsons’ Lady Raiders will get another chance to perfect their game later this week, when they head to Scotch Meadows Country Club in Laurinburg for another SAC tournament. Golfers will begin teeing off at 2 p.m.
