CHERAW, S.C. — The hot start to the season for the Richmond Senior High School junior varsity boys’ basketball team continued on Monday.

Making the trip down Highway 38, the JV Raiders rolled to a 49-22 win over the Braves. With the non-conference victory, it marked the fifth consecutive win for the JV Raiders.

Freshman guard Dakota Chavis led the Raiders in scoring with 15 points, dropping five in the first half before adding 10 points in the final two quarters. Just behind him was sophomore guard Deshon Watson, who netted eight of his 12 points in the first half.

The Raiders’ three-point shooters were on target in the first half, seeing the team connect on seven shots from downtown. Watson and sophomore guard Micah Jackson both dropped a pair of triples, while Chavis, Xavier Collazo and Travion Dumas added one apiece.

At the half, Richmond led 31-13. The Raiders’ defense limited the Braves to just two points in the third quarter and nine total second-half points.

Watson, Dumas, Chavis and Luke Williams combined for 10 points in the third quarter, and Chavis notched all of the Raiders’ eight points in the fourth.

“I’m proud that the guys have found a groove,” head coach Kenta Hutchinson said. “And I hope we keep building off of that as the season goes on.”

Other scorers for Richmond were Jackson (6), Collazo (5), Dumas (5), Williams (4) and sophomore Donovan Gadson (2).

Up next for the Raiders will be Pinecrest High School, as the two teams clash for the first time in Sandhills Athletic Conference play.

“We’re looking forward to Friday on the road at Pinecrest,” Hutchinson closed. “We know what to expect going against a disciplined team like Pinecrest and I know Friday’s game will tell us what type of team we really have.”

Tipoff against the Patriots is expected for a 6 p.m. start following the girls’ junior varsity game.
