CHERAW, S.C. — More consistent shooting from her team is what Richmond Senior High School head girls’ junior varsity coach Demi Watkins wanted to see.

And that’s what the JV Lady Raiders gave her in Monday’s non-conference game on the road at Cheraw High School. Richmond would earn its second straight win by the final score of 37-22, and returned to the .500 mark through four games played.

“We had a lot of offense today, which is what we needed,” Watkins said after the game. “C’Nedra Hinson had a great day handling the ball and scoring, too.

“Daniah McDonald scored the first three baskets and set the tone for the game,” she added.

Sophomore forward Rayana Shubert would lead the team with seven points, scoring all of them in the second quarter. McDonald (sophomore) and Hinson (freshman), along with sophomore Raven Robinson all finished with six points.

McDonald’s first three buckets gave her six points to lead all scorers in the opening frame. Hinson added a field goal and freshman Da’Veah Robinson chipped in two of her four points to give the Lady Raiders a 10-4 lead after the first.

Shubert’s seven points in the second came on three field goals and an and-one opportunity. Freshman EJ Davis joined the list of scorers with a bucket and Da’Veah Robinson collected her final two points. At the half, the Lady Raiders led 22-11.

Richmond’s defense would keep the Lady Braves in check the second half, holding them to just 11 more points in 16 minutes. Raven Robinson put her first four points of the game on the board in the third, and got help with Hinson’s final three points and two more from freshman Joy Styles.

Five points in the fourth quarter was Richmond’s lowest of the evening, but helped put Cheraw away for good. Adding two points in the second half, both on free throws, was freshman Nyla Stroman.

In total, eight Lady Raiders (2-2) would find the hoop in the win. Richmond will return to Sandhills Athletic Conference play on Friday at Pinecrest High School.

“We still have a lot of work to do for Friday’s game,” Watkins closed. “But we’ll be ready.”

Opening tip is set for 4 p.m. in Southern Pines.
