RICHMOND COUNTY — Thursday marked the first day of the middle school basketball season, and several local teams picked up wins to kick off the 2019-2020 campaign.

Hitting the hardwood were three Richmond County Middle Schools in Cordova, Ellerbe and Hamlet. Rockingham will begin its season on Monday. All teams will compete against fellow Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference opponents.

Red Rams rout East Hoke in season opener

On the road at East Hoke Middle School, the Hamlet boys and second-year head coach Keith Parsons made easy work of the Eagles in a 54-12 win. The Red Rams run “the system,” a fast-tempo offense that also yields a lot defensive turnovers.

Two Hamlet players would find double figures, seeing eighth grader Tristan Wall net a game-high 14 points. Fellow eighth grader JV Drake dropped 13 points in the win, and eighth grader David McNair chipped in with 9 points.

On defense, Hamlet used several players to force 28 steals. Drake had a team-high eight takeaways, while Wall and McNair swiped five and four, respectively.

Adding points in the win were Amer Morrison (5), Jay Hamilton (4), Jacoby Martin (4), Lareese Swinnie (3) and Toby McInnis (2). 

Up next, the Red Rams (1-0) will be on the road at Sandy Grove Middle School on Monday. The Lady Red Rams will begin at 4:15 p.m., followed by the boys.

Cavaliers use Wall to edge Sandy Grove

Also getting off to a 1-0 start to the season was the Cordova boys’ basketball team. The Cavaliers traveled to Sandy Grove and walked away with a 48-45 win against the Panthers.

Leading the way in scoring with an impressive 22 points was Jamarion Wall, who was followed by Jamison Jones’ 11 points. Helping Cordova pull off the exciting win was Isaiah Lockhart, who chipped in 5 points and led the team with 12 rebounds.

For head coach Gerald Ratliff’s team, Christopher Grey and Davion Ingram finished the game with 4 points each. Karson Thomas netted 2 points and had 5 rebounds.

The Cavs (1-0) will host Spring Hill Middle School on Monday, with the Lady Cavs starting at 4 p.m. and the boys playing after.

Ellerbe teams struggle in losses to Carver

The Ellerbe boys’ and girls’ teams made the trip to Laurel Hill to face Carver Middle School, and both teams would suffer tough defeats to start the season.

Head coach Derek Anderson and the Lady Wildcats fell 61-18. Taniya Chandler-Jones scored a team-high 9 points for Ellerbe, while Maddie Maree contributed six points. Also finding the basket were Zoey Robson and Adena Gibson.

In boys’ action, the Wildcats and head coach Tommy Shelton dropped a 54-13 decision. Conner Utley connected for 4 points, while Brooks Calhoun and Tyrez Collins each splashed home one three-pointer. Vance Goodwin and Dalan Utley hit free throws in the loss.

Both Ellerbe teams are 0-1 and will host East Hoke on Monday at 4 p.m.
