ELLERBE — It may have taken it a little longer than it wanted to, but the Ellerbe Middle School girls’ basketball team earned its first win of the season on Thursday.

Welcoming in rival Cordova Middle School, the Lady Wildcats used a strong second half and a career performance from Taniya Chandler to bounce the Lady Cavaliers 26-21 in a close ball game. 

Chandler would net a career-high 18 points for Ellerbe, draining nine field goals in the process. For the Lady Cavs, Yasmine McLaughlin helped keep the visiting team close with a team-high 14 points.

Three other Lady Wildcats contributed on the scoreboard, as Symone Terry added four second-half points. Faith Massey and Zoey Robson each netted a field goal in the win. 

Erin Fields scored five points to assist McLaughlin and Cordova.

It would be the Lady Cavs who got off to a strong start, outscoring Ellerbe 8-4 in the first quarter. McLaughlin hit two field goals and a free throw, while Fields added a bucket. 

Chandler got her scoring started with two points, as Robson added her lone bucket in the opening frame.

Taking a 12-10 lead into the break, Cordova added four more points in the second on a Fields jumper and two free throws from McLaughlin. Ellerbe scored six points in the stanza, with two field goals from Chandler and a Massey basket.

Both teams kept it close in the third, scoring eight points each. Chandler started to find her groove in the third, netting the first six of her 12 second-half points. Terry joined the stat sheet with two of her four points.

McLaughlin helped Cordova maintain a two-point lead at the end of the third, 20-18, with six points. She knocked in four shots from the line and connected on another field goal. Fields ended her game with two more points.

The turning point for the Lady Wildcats was the fourth quarter, which saw the home team end the game on an 8-1 run. Ellerbe’s defense held McLaughlin to just a free throw in the final 10 minutes.

Chandler kept her pace with three more field goals in the late going. Terry iced the win with two more points.

Ellerbe’s record moved to 1-6 on the season and will look for win No. 2 when the Lady Wildcats welcome in West Hoke on Monday at 4:15 p.m.. Cordova fell to 0-6 and will host Hamlet Middle School on Monday at 4 p.m.
