LUMBER BRIDGE — Hoping for a chance to redeem themselves from a 30-point loss earlier in the season, the No. 3 Hamlet Lady Red Rams headed to No. 2 Sandy Grove Middle School on Thursday for the semifinals of the Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference playoffs.

Despite a valiant effort from the Lady Red Rams, Hamlet saw its season come to a close one game short of returning to the SEMSAC title game for the second year in a row.

Sandy Grove edged head coach Mitch Coe and the Lady Red Rams 32-31. Hamlet finished the season with an 8-3 overall record.

“We came up a little short today,” Coe said following the much closer game the second time around. “I’m so proud of my girls. Sandy Grove beat us by 30 points in our first meeting, so we knew we had to play our best ball.

“The girls fought hard in the fourth and battled back to take a good shot with 15 seconds left to take the lead,” he added. “But the shot didn’t fall. It was a tremendous season.”

Leading the way for Hamlet was eighth grader Ryelan Lyerly, who capped her middle school career with 14 points. Teammate Orena Drake added six points and Saquanna Bostic chipped in five points.

Hamlet trailed 16-13 at the half, but saw that deficit climb to nine points, 30-21, at the start of the fourth quarter. Although it managed to hold the Lady Panthers to just two points in the final 10 minutes, Hamlet couldn’t complete the comeback and advance.

With Hamlet’s loss, coupled with No. 1 Rockingham’s loss to No. 4 Carver on Thursday, all of the Richmond County girls’ basketball programs are out of the playoffs. Sandy Grove will host Carver for this season’s title game.

The lone remaining RCS team is the No. 2 Rockets, who will play No. 1 West Hoke Middle School for the championship next week.
