ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior High School junior varsity boys’ basketball team split its two conference games earlier this week against Seventy-First and Lumberton high schools.

Playing in back-to-back nights on Tuesday and Wednesday at home, the JV Raiders started with a 61-52 win over the Falcons, before dropping a 75-55 decision to the Pirates.

The split with the Sandhills Athletic Conference opponents moved the team’s overall record to 14-7, while the JV Raiders sit at 7-6 against conference foes.

Head coach Kenta Hutchinson noted that the team has been battling injuries down the home stretch of the season and several key players have missed significant minutes.

Against Seventy-First, sophomore forward Luke Williams netted a game-high 20 points. He scored 12 first-half points, including two three-pointers, and added his final eight points in the fourth.

Fellow sophomore teammate Xavier Collazo added 11 points, picking up nine of them in the opening frame. Other scorers against Seventy-First were Micah Jackson (10 points), Deshon Watson (8 points), Zion Baldwin (7 points) and Travion Dumas (3 points).

Leading 35-24 at the half, the JV Raiders overcame a slow third quarter (just six points) and sealed the deal with 26 points in the final eight minutes.

A night later with the Pirates in town, two high-scoring quarters in the second and fourth frames from Lumberton handed Richmond a loss.

Collazo led the charge for the Raiders with 19 points, netting 15 points in the first half. Watson scored 13 points, Dumas connected for 10 points and Williams added six points.

The JV Raiders will close their campaign Friday on the road at rival Scotland.

Freshman Raiders also split with Falcons, Pirates

Also playing home games on Tuesday and Wednesday was the Richmond County Ninth Grade Academy boys’ basketball team. The freshman Raiders flip-flopped with the JV team, splitting with a win over Lumberton and losing to Seventy-First.

Against the Falcons, a 64-49 loss, Frazion Steele notched a season-high 16 points, netting eight points in the second and fourth quarters. Zyion Baldwin chipped in nine points, Zay Hubbard scored seven and Tez Anderson finished with six.

Seventy-First outscored Richmond 33-22 to put the game away.

The freshman Raiders rebounded with a 55-49 win over Lumberton an afternoon later. A 22-point third quarter, and 15 more points in the fourth, gave the home team the push it needed to return to the win column.

Guard Emoni McBride put up a team-high 14 points, as Jeremiah Jenks and Steele contributed 10 and 8 points, respectively. Hubbard added seven in the win.

The RCNGA team (6-3) will also conclude its season on the road at Scotland on Friday.
