ROCKINGHAM — With each passing day we age, and sooner or later we will probably need some sort of assistance with the challenges that follow.

That’s where Richmond County Aging Services comes in to help.

The organization has been offering a wide variety of services to residents throughout Richmond County for around 30 years. Along with all the resources they have to offer, they also extend opportunities to help with independent living and enrichment for the aging.

There are four senior centers in Richmond county. Three of them — East Rockingham Senior Center, Ellerbe Senior Center and Rockingham Senior Center — are run through the county and the Hamlet Senior Center is operated by the city. Meals are provided at each site.

Some of the services offered include social and recreational activities which are hosted by the centers, health and wellness programs, educational activities, nutrition services such as Meals on Wheels, transportation, arts and humanities programs, counseling, information and referral services, special needs programs, and employment opportunities along with many other supportive services. There are also opportunities for volunteering.

All individuals are required to be 55 years of age or older to participate, although the Meals on Wheels program and the In-Home Aid programs require the participant to be 60 years or older.

Many of the programs offered to the aging are free of charge; only a few require a fee or suggested donation. In order to allow the services at low or no cost, fundraisers and raffles are held throughout the year to help supplement the costs of the Rockingham, Ellerbe, and East Rockingham centers.

One upcoming fundraiser will take place at Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q on Thursday Feb. 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. Smithfield’s has agreed to donate 20% of all sales during this time to benefit the Aging Services. All you need to do is purchase your meal and leave a copy of your receipt the night of the fundraiser.

There is a need for more volunteers at this time. If you are interested in volunteering or donating and need more information, contact Kim Partin at 910-997-4491 or visit their website https://www.richmondnc.com/245/Aging-Services.
