ROCKINGHAM — One person was killed and two were injured Thursday afternoon in a wreck on U.S. 1 South.
According to Jeremy Chance, chief of Cordova Fire & Rescue, first responders were dispatched to the crash at 4:01 p.m. and crews arrived five minutes later.
Chance said a SUV and small car collided head-on about a half-mile south of the intersection at Rosalyn and Mizpah roads.
It took an hour and 13 minutes to extricate one patient from the vehicle, according to Chance.
Crews from Ellerbe Rescue, FirstHealth EMS and deputies from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist and the East Rockingham Fire Department set up a landing zone at Burlington Industries in Cordova.
The patient was freed at 5:13 p.m., Chance said.
One patient was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Chance, and the two others were airlifted by helicopters from UNC Hospital’s Carolina Air Care and Atrium Health’s MedCenter Air.
Chance said the road was reopened at 6:12 p.m.
The N.C. State Highway Patrol is investigating. A call made to troopers was not returned in time for this story.
