ROCKINGHAM — A man is facing a half-dozen felony charges related to sexual abuse of a child and a woman is accused of not reporting that abuse.
Richmond County Jail records show 26-year-old Kurtis Scott Madsen was booked at 12:55 p.m. Friday on six charges: four counts of statutory sex offense with a child by an adult; and one count each of statutory rape of a child by an adult and assault of a child under 12.
Investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 40-year-old Brandi Marie Smith is charged with failing to prevent or report juvenile abuse in the case. She was also arrested and booked early Friday afternoon.
There were two child victims involved in the case, according to investigators.
Madsen is being held under a $500,000 secured bond, Smith under a $5,000 secured bond.
They are both scheduled to appear in court Dec. 19.
Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Madsen was convicted of possessing stolen goods in 2015 and misdemeanor larceny in 2013. Both convictions were in Scotland County.
State records show no prior convictions for Smith.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
