ROCKINGHAM — A man awaiting trial for allegedly shooting at deputies three years ago is back in jail, this time accused for not showing up for court last year.

Records show that 84-year-old Douglas Eugene Goodwin was booked into the Richmond County Jail at 2:31 p.m. Aug. 10 and is being held on a $500,000 secured bond.

An order for his arrest was issued May 23, 2025 after Goodwin allegedly failed to appear in court four days earlier on two counts of assault on a law enforcement or probation officer with a firearm.

Goodwin is accused of firing shots at deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office during a standoff on Aug. 3, 2023 — after reportedly making a call to 911 about someone shooting outside his home.

The RCSO Special Response Team reportedly forced entry into the home and took Goodwin into custody.

Online court records show Goodwin was indicted on Sept. 18, 2023 and the case was transferred to superior court.

A motion to withdraw counsel was granted on April 7, 2025 and, according to records, Goodwin was not in court at his next appearance on May 19, 2025. He also reportedly failed to appear on Aug. 5, 2025.

Records show the case was dismissed with leave on Feb. 24.

Goodwin’s next court date is scheduled for Sept. 8.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
