CAMERON — Despite having just six players on its roster, the Richmond Senior High School junior varsity girls’ basketball team scored more than twice the amount of points than its opponent did on Tuesday.
Part of a four-game JV and varsity sweep against Union Pines High School, the JV Lady Raiders rolled past the JV Lady Vikings 67-30.
“The girls came out ready to play and never really let up,” head coach Tonia Breeden said. “All six girls scored and all six played great on both sides of the ball.”
Freshman Quanna Bostic was the game’s leading scorer with 22 points, netting 12 points in the first half and 10 more in the final two periods.
Sophomores Jamia Crowder and Yasmeen McLaughlin also reached double digits, scoring 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Also contributing in the win were Jasmine Williams (6 points), Da’Veah Robinson (5 points) and Symone Terry (4 points).
From the opening tip, the JV Lady Raiders controlled the tempo to jump out to a 27-11 lead. Bostic scored 10 points on four field goals and two free throws and Crowder added 8 points.
McLaughlin got her scoring started with six points and a triple from Williams put Richmond ahead by 16 points.
Seven more points in the second quarter gave the JV Lady Raiders a 34-14 lead at halftime. Robinson led the way with three points in the second, followed by two points each from Bostic and McLaughlin.
A 21-point showing in the third frame broke the game open as the JV Lady Raiders’ defense held Union Pines to just 4 points. Each player scored in the third, with McLaughlin’s six points leading the way.
Bostic and Terry hit two field goals apiece, Williams scored her final three points and Robinson and Crowder both had two points.
In the final period, Bostic and Crowder each scored 6 points to put an exclamation point on the victory.
The JV Lady Raiders (7-3, 5-2 SAC) will get an extended period of time off since Richmond’s next two opponents, Southern Lee and Lee County, don’t have JV girls’ teams.
The team will return on the road at Scotland on Feb. 11.
