ROCKINGHAM — A man with only a few days left on parole is accused of stealing a car in East Rockingham.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call on Oct. 18 regarding the theft of a 2007 Nissan Sentra from Rogosin Street, off of Mill Road. The vehicle was reportedly stolen around 6:30 that morning.

The sheriff’s office posted a photo of the suspect and the car to its Facebook page.

On Monday, Oct. 21, deputies reportedly responded to a call of two men trespassing on property on Millstone Road in Ellerbe. When the caller told the alleged trespassers he was calling 911, the two men reportedly fled on foot.

The responding deputy reportedly found the stolen Nissan in a wooded area.

Deputies were reportedly able to identify the suspects and later found and arrested them on Center Street in Cordova.

Investigators charged 44-year-old Brian Eugene Overman, of Cordova, with a felony count of larceny of a motor vehicle and a count of first-degree trespassing and is being held on a combined $21,000 secured bond.

Richmond County Jail records show Overman is being held without bond on a parole violation.

(Note: The press release issued by the sheriff’s office doesn’t name the other alleged trespasser.)

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Overman was released from prison in January after serving time from 2020 convictions in three counties:

  • Richmond: breaking and entering vehicles
  • New Hanover: larceny of a motor vehicle; possession of a stolen vehicle; identity fraud/theft (attempted); injury to personal property

  • His parole was scheduled to end Oct. 26.

Overman’s criminal record dates back to 1998 when he was convicted of simple assault, larceny, breaking and entering, and driving with a revoked license in Randolph County.

His probation on the larceny and B&E convictions was revoked later that year when he was convicted of cheating property or services, fleeing to elude arrest and driving with a revoked license.

Records show Overman has had multiple other convictions over the years, including several counts of misdemeanor and felony larceny, larceny of motor fuel, possessing stolen goods, receiving stolen goods, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, assault on an officer and, assault on a child.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
