HAMLET — Residents with questions about the Amazon Web Services data center complex will be able to ask them during an upcoming event at Richmond Community College.
AWS is hosting a drop-in open house from 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 1 at Cole Auditorium on the RCC campus.
This event will be specific to Amazon’s complex on Airport Road, which is currently under construction, according to Economic Developer Martie Butler.
There will be no formal presentation, but attendees will be able to “speak directly with Amazon subject matter experts” about how they “build, operate, and maintain data centers.”
Attendees can register online and indicate what they'd like to learn: https://form.jotform.com/262154176353153
The Amazon complex was first announced in June 2025, with the Richmond County Board of Commissioners approving an incentive agreement a few days before.
A ground-breaking ceremony was held in late October, and Amazon awarded $200,000 in grant funding to local organizations in February.
Many people spoke out against the complex during a public hearing for a pair of air quality permits hosted by the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality Division of Air Quality in late July.
