SALISBURY — Anne Garrett Smith, 91, of Salisbury, formerly of Falling Waters, West Virginia, and Hamlet, passed away peacefully Oct. 31, 2020 at Trinity Oaks Health & Rehab.
Anne was born Feb. 16, 1929 to Charles Grady Garrett and Florence (Covington) Garrett of Rockingham.
Anne attended Rockingham High School and married M. LeRoy (Roy) Smith of Hamlet, a U.S. Navy officer and aviator, in 1950.
Anne traveled overseas extensively, living in Trinidad, British West Indies, New Delhi, India and later in London, England. Anne and her husband Roy resided in Hamlet for many years, where she was secretary of the First Presbyterian Church.
Anne was a loving, devoted mother to five children: Roy Jr, Linda, Steve, Julie and Paul. A woman of strong faith, Anne was loved by all those she knew and touched. Friends and family alike adored Anne as a sweet, gentle, kind-hearted soul, full of grace and beauty. She was an accomplished artist and loved teaching and doing crafts of all kinds with her daughters and grandchildren.
Preceding Anne in death were her parents; her husband Roy of 58 years; brothers, Frank Garrett and Charles Grady Garrett Jr.; sister, Jeanne Allen; daughter, Linda Novack; son, Steve Smith; and grandson, Garrett Brownell.
Survivors include her sons, Roy Smith (Dolores) of Austin, Texas, and Paul Smith (Nora) of Waynesville; daughter, Julie Helms (Joe) of Salisbury; grandchildren, Shelley Rutherford (Matt) of Austin, Texas, Paul Smith Jr. of Waynesville, Jeremy Tyler Helms of Charleston, South Carolina, Josh Helms (Shannon) of Lombard, Illinois, Lindy Croft (Harrison) of Charleston, South Carolina, Carson Brownell (Kristi) of Sanford, Florida, Cooper Brownell (Jen) of Boca Raton, Florida, and Steve Smith Jr of Oldsmar, Florida; great-grandchildren Olivia and Beau Rutherford, Reese Brownell, and Henry Helms.
A graveside service will be announced at a later date due to the COVID environment.
