HAMLET – While the holidays are rapidly approaching, the Hamlet Police Department has had no respite as of yet. Three persons were taken into custody in conjunction with two separate situations this past weekend.
After an active ongoing investigation by the HPD in connection with a series of vehicle break-ins in Hamlet, an arrest was executed by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department on Friday, December 15.
Cody William Mabe, age 24, of 180 Mill Street in Rockingham, was apprehended and charged with breaking and entering of a vehicle.
The crimes occurred on October 13, in the Woodstone area of Hamlet.
Mabe is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a $10,000 secured bond.
Hamlet Officers Pursue Vehicle in High-Speed Chase
A “hot pursuit” scenario unfolded on Saturday, December 16, at approximately 11:45 p.m. Officers Chad Haywood and Darren Brewington observed a vehicle traveling east at a high rate of speed on Hamlet Avenue.
The officers activated their blue light and the driver of the vehicle gave indication of pulling into the Arco Station, only to abruptly turn back onto Hamlet Avenue and speed away. Haywood and Brewington continued pursuit of the vehicle, noting the unsafe movements and erratic driving of the speeding vehicle.
“They ran the stop sign at Corning and Spring streets, and then ran the one on Washington Street at 177, almost causing an accident,” said Officer Haywood.
The vehicle, with the driver and a passenger still inside, was soon located in the parking lot of Piney Point Apartments.
Upon taking the occupants into custody, it was discovered that they were females, only 13 years of age, who had “borrowed” the car from a family member. However, evidently that family member did not understand that the car had been “borrowed” – it was reported to have been stolen.
Juvenile petitions have been filed with the courts and both girls were released into the custody of their parents.
Another event of note was a reported allegation of a sexual assault having occurred on Sunday, December 17, in a vehicle parked off of West Hamlet Avenue. This case is under investigation and no charges have been filed.
