HAMLET — An attorney representing the Seaboard City’s now-former police chief has released a statement regarding his separation from the Hamlet Police Department.
The statement was sent to the RO around noon on July 30 via email by attorney Rachel C. Van Camp, of the Moore County firm Van Camp, Meacham & Newman, PLLC.
“We are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the separation of Chief Brown’s employment and look forward to pursuing this matter on his behalf,” Van Camp said in the statement.
“It is unfortunate that, after almost three decades in law enforcement and a successful and honorable career as Chief of Police for the Hamlet Police Department, Chief Brown is now in a position where he is forced to defend his integrity and against allegations that are false and baseless,” Van Camp continued.
“We anticipate that information will be brought to light soon that will provide the community with a more accurate and thorough understanding of the circumstances surrounding the separation of Chief Brown’s employment with the City of Hamlet and look forward to exposing the truth.”
Just what those allegations are are currently unknown to the public.
Hamlet City Manager John Terziu confirmed last week that Brown was no longer with the department as of July 23.
However, he has been reluctant to say anything else, citing “ongoing internal and external investigations” and “applicable laws governing personnel matters.”
Terziu has also confirmed that Hudson Chitwood, who served as a major with the department under Brown, is no longer employed with the city.
As of July 29, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation had not received a formal written request to look into the department.
Brown was hired as chief in 2021 after serving in the same role with the Hertford Police Department for several years — leaving what he referred to as an “acrimonious political environment.”
