There are multiple opportunities to listen to live music — including jazz, bluegrass, country, rap, classic rock and blues — this weekend in "Rockin’ Richmond County."
On Wednesday, the city of Hamlet is hosting a tribute to the “Jazz Messiah” John Coltrane on what would be his 100th birthday.
Coltrane was born in Hamlet on Sept. 23, 1926, but grew up in High Point, and went on to become one of the most revered jazz musicians in history.
The free event, starting at 5 p.m. at the Coltrane mural, will feature music from Nyjel Graham and Coltrane cousin DJ Daye.
In case of rain, the event will be moved inside the Hamlet Visitors Center.
Country rap duo The Lacs will be performing a free concert Thursday evening during NitroFest in downtown Rockingham’s Harrington Square, a prelude to the NHRA Nationals at Rockingham Dragway Friday-Saturday.
Local country and classic rock cover band Good Company — featuring Eric Whitfield, Chuck Smith, Eddie Brown and Brian Grooms — will be performing Friday evening at the track.
Back down in Hamlet, the River Ridge Bluegrass band will be playing in Main Street Park from 6-8 p.m. for the September installment of the Boxcar Concert Series.
Starting on Sundays in 2022, the free outdoor music series was moved to Friday’s to coincide with Hamlet's food truck events. Food trucks scheduled for this week are: Mama Blair’s; Max’s Millstone BBQ; Puckered Up Lemonade; Tacos Mr. Pancho; Mini’s On the Go; and Chinese Food & Dulces Delicias.
Later on Friday, Landmark Tavern in Hamlet will have karaoke, and the Beach Fever Band will be playing at Hudson Brothers Deli in Rockingham.
VFW Post 4203 Auxiliary will host Music for Military, featuring performances by Whiskey River, Beach Fever and local blues band Common Ground. The concert is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
Donations of $10 will be taken at the door, with proceeds going to fund the auxiliary’s various veterans projects and community outreach events.
Whiskey River will also be playing later that night at the Landmark Tavern from 9 p.m.-midnight
