ASHEBORO — Heavy scoring in the first and third quarters helped the Richmond Senior High School junior varsity girls’ basketball team earn its first win of the season on Tuesday.
Rebounding from a season-opening loss, the JV Lady Raiders rolled past Uwharrie Charter Academy 38-19.
Richmond netted 12 points in the opening frame and added a game-high 18 points in the third quarter to pick up the non-conference victory.
The double-digit win was also the first of head coach Tonia Breeden’s coaching career.
“I was really proud of how they bounced back from the loss last week,” Breeden said. “They worked on the mistakes they made and it showed.
“It was a team effort and everyone did their part. All seven girls played great,” she added.
For the second game in a row, freshman Quanna Bostic scored a team-high in points, netting 17 points against the JV Lady Eagles. Bostic scored six points in the first quarter, before dropping 11 points in the second half.
Also hitting double figures was sophomore Jamia Crowder, who added 12 points. Crowder had three field goals in the first quarter and added two points in each of the three remaining frames.
Richmond opened the game on a 12-4 run, and added four more points to take a 16-9 halftime lead.
A pivotal third quarter opened the Lady Raiders’ lead, using 9 points from Bostic, including a triple. Crowder had a bucket and teammates Yasmeen McLaughlin and Da’Veah Robinson chipped in two points each.
Jasmine Williams capped the third-quarter scoring with a three-pointer, her only points of the game.
Leading 32-11 to start the fourth quarter, a field goal apiece from Bostic and Crowder helped seal the deal. The JV Lady Eagles outscored Richmond 8-4 in the final period, but it wasn’t enough.
Sammy Chrisca led Uwharrie Charter with 13 points, followed by 4 points from Madison Hardy.
Richmond (1-1) will travel to non-conference Pine Forest High School on Friday. Play will begin at 4:30 p.m.
