ROCKINGHAM — Carolyn Williams Saunders, 92, of Rockingham, passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 2, 2021 at Hermitage Retirement Center.

She was born March 28, 1929 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late John and Margaret McDonald Williams.

Mrs. Saunders was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rockingham for more than 60 years. She retired from Richmond County Schools where she began working as a library assistant and proudly ended her career as secretary for the Superintendent. Carolyn was an avid reader, choosing many authors and reading their entire series.

“Nana,” as she was called by grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many others, loved her home of 69 years and her neighbors. Carolyn made the best iced tea and the “best ever” German chocolate cake and marble pound cake. She loved to cook for the entire family and liked (expected) for us to gather for holiday meals at her home.

Our family would like to extend our love and thanks to a beloved caregiver who made it possible for our mother to remain in her home two years prior to the move to the Hermitage Retirement Center.

A graveside service was held Thursday, Aug. 5, 2021 at Eastside Cemetery.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred Reece Saunders, and is survived by a son and two daughters: Marsha Covington-Riggsbee and husband Sam Riggsbee; Winfred Reece Saunders Jr. and wife, Melanie Carroll Saunders; and Sharon Saunders Johnson; grandchildren, Skyler Covington and wife Erica, Summer Covington and wife Sherri Beane,Claire Saunders, Laurel Saunders and Michael Saunders, Rebecca Bowdren and husband Brett, Ross Morgan and wife Sami Jo, and Chandler Johnson; great-grandchildren, Gracen and Owen Covington, Hadley, Parker, and Briggs Bowdren, and Sutton Ann Morgan.

The family wishes to extend a special and loving thank you to the caregivers at the Hermitage Retirement Center in Rockingham. We will always have gratitude in our hearts for their extraordinary patience and loving care of our mother, as well as the kindness shown towards our entire family.

Memorials may be made to the organization of the giver’s choice.
