Caulder named chief of Northside Fire Department

ROCKINGHAM — Matt Caulder is determined to help the Northside Volunteer Fire Department move forward as the new chief.

Caulder was officially announced as the head of the volunteer department Monday evening by the Board of Directors.

“We’re very proud of what Matt has done to get himself prepared for this position,” said James Tate. “We’re looking forward to you guys all working very closely with Matt, so the Northside Fire Department can continue to move forward for the safety and security of the members of our community.”

Caulder has been with Northside since 2010, joining the department when he was still in high school. He worked several years for the N.C. Forest Service and has been with the Richmond County Schools Transportation Department for the past three years.

The new chief thanked all the firemen who were at Monday’s meeting, saying, “With all y’all’s help we’ll be able to build this place up and get where we’re supposed to be.”

Caulder said he plans to bring the station back “to the good ‘ol days” where members came down and “hung out” — “we’re gonna make it home again.”

“We’ve got some obstacles ahead, but we’re going to get through it and make some good things happen.”

One of the department’s main obstacles — which is a trend seen at departments across Richmond County and the country — is membership.

The department currently has 24 firefighters — about half of what it had a decade ago.

Caulder said he would like to have more volunteers on standby during the day, but added, “The help we’ve got, we’re very appreciative.”

“A lot of people lose interest when they realize they don’t get a check,” Caulder continued. “My check has always been serving the community and helping people in need — being able to give back.”
