ROCKINGHAM — A man is facing multiple charges after allegedly threatening a woman and leading deputies on a chase down County Home Road.

An arrest warrant alleges that 26-year-old Cortez Dakota Sturdivant threatened to kill her while chasing her in a vehicle on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The reported victim allegedly knew that Sturdivant had a gun.

A deputy with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office reportedly tried to stop Sturdivant on County Home Road while responding to the reported victim’s complaint.

Sturdivant, whose license has been revoked, allegedly refused to stop and passed several vehicles going around a curve with a double-yellow line and was speeding — reportedly driving 80 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Following the chase, deputies reportedly found a Glock .40-caliber handgun in the driver-side door of Sturdivant’s vehicle, as well as a half-ounce or less of pot.

At some point, Sturdivant also damaged the rear driver-side window of a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Sturdivant was arrested and charged with: fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle; communicating threats; injury to personal property; carrying a concealed weapon; possession of up to a half-ounce of marijuana; aggressive driving; driving while license revoked; reckless driving to endanger; failure to heed a light or siren; speeding; driving left of center; and following too closely.

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail where he is being held on a combined $115,000 secured bond. Sturdivant’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 2.

Online court records show Sturdivant has a pending charge of driving while license revoked from 2025.

Cortez appears to have no prior criminal convictions in the state, according to records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
