ROCKINGHAM — Two out of town men are facing charges in connection to a theft at a Richmond County retailer.
According to warrants, 50-year-old Charles Bender, of Charlotte, and 30-year-old Quantel James McColl, of Cheraw, South Carolina, conspired to steal from the Rockingham Walmart on Aug. 4.
Based on the charges, it appears Bender is the only one of the pair accused of stealing more than $1,500 in merchandise: an Xbox gaming console; a steering wheel for a PS5; a Kodak camera; and an iPhone 15.
Bender is also accused of hitting a woman on the arm while fleeing the area.
Records indicate both were arrested Aug. 5 and charged with possession of stolen goods and felony conspiracy. Bender faces additional charges of felony larceny and assault on a female.
McColl was given a $5,000 secured bond and made bail the same day. (No mug shot was available at the time of writing.) As of 1 p.m. Aug. 6, Bender was still being held on a $15,000 secured bond. They are both scheduled to appear in court Aug. 21.
Neither man appears to have any other pending charges or prior convictions in North Carolina, and McColl has no record in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
