ROCKINGHAM — A South Carolina man is accused of trying to shoot into a moving SUV.
An arrest warrant alleges that 38-year-old Christopher Shawn Burns, of Cheraw, South Carolina, attempted to fire a .380 caliber handgun into a 2007 Chrysler Aspen Limited — while it was occupied and in operation — on Aug. 29.
The warrant, issued the same day as the reported incident, does not state where the incident occurred or how many people were inside the vehicle.
Burns was arrested Sept. 4 on a charge of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. On the same day, he was also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon.
According to the second warrant, Burns was convicted in Chesterfield County, South Carolina in 2011 on a charge of maintaining or possessing a Schedule I, II or III controlled substance with intent to distribute and was sentenced to 18 months of probation.
Publicly available South Carolina court records do not show that conviction. However, records show Burns pleaded guilty to public disorderly conduct in 2012.
Burns is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a combined $10,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 11.
Records appear to show Burns has no other pending charges or prior criminal convictions in North Carolina.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
