HAMLET — The Seaboard City’s two top cops are no longer employed with the city.
City Manager John Terziu confirmed early Thursday afternoon that Chief Dennis Brown and Major Hudson Chitwood are no longer with the Hamlet Police Department as of July 23.
Citing personnel laws, Terziu would not give a reason for the separation or any other information regarding the situation.
Detective Lt. James Carsto has been appointed interim chief.
As for finding a replacement, Terziu said, “We will be conducting (an) assessment process going forward.
Brown was hired as chief of the Hamlet Police Department in 2021, after resigning from the Hertford Police Department due to what he referred to as an “acrimonious political environment.”
Brown was the third chief of the department within a decade.
Scott Waters served in the role from 2014 until his retirement in 2019. He was followed by Asheboro native Tommy McMasters, who held the position from April 2019 until November 2020.
