Close game ends in loss for Lady Raiders against South Stanly

Richmond falls 4-1 in non-conference game

ROCKINGHAM — A lot of zeroes were put up in Wednesday’s non-conference softball game, but Richmond Senior High School was edged late.

Facing South Stanly High School, a team the Lady Raiders were run-ruled by last week, Richmond came up just short 4-1.

Sophomore pitcher Mackenzie Quick was a big part of the Lady Raiders’ closer outing against the Lady Bulls. She pitched a complete game and allowed four unearned runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Both teams were held scoreless until the sixth inning when South Stanly scored three runs in the top half and Richmond scored its lone run in the bottom half.

The Lady Bulls added an insurance run in the seventh.

An error with two outs plated the first run of the night for South Stanly. That was followed by a two-RBI double to make it 3-0.

Freshman Claire Clark gave the Lady Raiders some life in the bottom half, swatting a solo homer on the first pitch of the inning to cut the deficit to two runs.

Richmond would strand a runner at third base in the sixth. South Stanly’s final run in the seventh was the result of a two-out double.

In their turn at the plate in the seventh, the Lady Raiders went down in order.

Clark had two of Richmond’s three hits — a home run and a triple. Senior Hayden Robinson had the other, which was a double.

The Lady Raiders (2-6) start Mid-South Conference play Tuesday at home against Pine Forest High School (1-5). First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.

Sports editor’s note: The Richmond junior varsity softball team didn’t play Wednesday.
