COLUMN: The importance of Christmas

Why is Christmas important? Why is seeing Jesus as the Messiah significant? What does the Bible tell us about God’s love found in Jesus Christ?

While the world around us might be filled with bright lights, festive decorations and the clamor of commercialism, it is vital for us to remember the significance of God's great gift to all of us. The answer to these questions is found in John 3:16. These are timeless words of John the Apostle.

John 3:16 encapsulates the heart and soul of Christmas in a single verse. All of Scripture is wrapped up in this verse. This is what John 3:16 says: "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."

It is in these powerful words that we find the true essence of Christmas — God's never-ending love for us.

Christmas is a season of giving. It is a time to exchange presents with our loved ones and cherish the joy of generosity. But the greatest gift ever bestowed upon humanity is the gift of Jesus Christ. God, in His infinite love, saw the brokenness, sinfulness and despair of this world and chose to intervene by sending His Son to redeem us.

By sending Jesus, God demonstrated His incredible love for us. In a humble manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes, the Son of God entered our world, taking on our human form, and showed us the way to eternal life.

For what purpose did God send His Son? The answer lies in John 3:16. God's intention was not to condemn the world but to offer salvation and eternal life to all who would believe in His Son. Jesus came not to judge or to punish us, but to save us.

As we celebrate the birth of Christ, we must remember that Christmas is not just about the joy of presents. It’s not just about the warmth of family gatherings, or the satisfaction of delicious feasts. It is about reflecting upon and accepting God's love for us as displayed in John 3:16.

Christmas reminds us that we are not alone in this world, that God saw our brokenness and pursued us with His relentless love. The birth of Jesus kindles hope within our hearts. It is a hope that assures us that whatever trials we face, God is with us. He is guiding us on the path to eternal life.

So, let’s not allow the true meaning of Christmas to be overshadowed by the hustle and bustle of the season. Instead, let us embrace John 3:16 as a guiding light, reminding us of God's immense love for us and the salvation that is freely offered through faith in His Son.

As we exchange gifts with one another and spread joy to those around you. Let’s also share the gift of God's love. For just as God gave us His Son, we are called to give love, compassion, and forgiveness to one another. In doing so, we embody the spirit of Christmas and fulfill the profound message of John 3:16 in our lives.

And may the peace and love of God always guide us.

Merry Christmas, all.
