SANFORD — The Richmond Senior High School wrestling team competed in its second Sandhills Athletic Conference tri-meet of the season Wednesday.

On the road at Southern Lee High School, the Raiders split their two conference matches with the host Cavaliers and Union Pines High School.

It was the second time this season Richmond went 1-1 in an SAC event. The Raiders defeated Southern Lee 35-31 and fell to the Vikings 64-11.

The program’s two most consistent wrestlers this winter, senior K’Mauri Morgan (215-pounds) and sophomore Hayden Smith (144-pounds), were the only two to go 2-0.

Earning a win apiece were senior Jackson Hamilton (190-pounds), sophomores Jeremiah Covington (285-pounds) and Adan King (138-pounds), and freshmen Dylan Nunez (120-pounds) and Bentley Warwick (175-pounds)

Four of Richmond’s six wins against the Cavaliers were the result of a forfeit, which awarded the Raiders 24 total points. The final of those forfeits proved to be the difference maker in the five-point victory.

Warwick, Hamilton, Morgan and Covington were each credited with six points when they didn’t have an opponent to face.

Registering the other two victories were King (138) and Smith (144).

Smith continued his strong season with Richmond’s only pinfall victory between the team’s two matches. Getting six points, Smith held Nasire Jones to the mat.

Moving into a varsity role, King picked up a 17-2 technical fall victory and five points in his match with Devin Donahoo.

The Raiders suffered seven losses via pinfall to the Vikings, as well as two forfeits and two technical fall losses.

Smith capped his 11-point performance with a 21-6 technical fall win (five points) in his bout with Amir Jackson.

Morgan, who was recently ranked as the No. 2 4A wrestler in his weight class in the state, and Nunez both notched three points with decision victories.

Nunez and his opponent Chris Schroth traded lots of points, but it was Nunez who surged ahead to win the match 15-11.

Morgan was able to create a little more distance in his matchup with Dantell Williams, winning 7-1 after three periods.

Richmond (7-9, 2-2 SAC) will host a conference meet next Wednesday for senior night. The Raiders will face Hoke County and Scotland high schools, beginning at 5 p.m.
