Cordova Fire & Rescue hosting event on Pee Dee River

Options include kayak and float races, lazy river

CORDOVA — The Pee Dee River is expected to be filled with kayaks and floats on Saturday, Aug. 2 for the inaugural River Run Float Fun hosted by Cordova Fire and Rescue.

While the event will serve as a minor fundraiser for the department, Chief Jeremy Chance said it was also an effort to try to bring back activity to the river.

The main activity of the event will be a 6.4-mile kayak race from the boat landing near the bridge on U.S. 74, west of Rockingham, to the Dairy Barn landing at the Diggs Tract, south of Cordova.

The cost to enter the race is $20, with the winner taking home $500. The second- and third-place runners-up will receive $250 and $100, respectively.

There is also a float/tube race — with no paddles — with the cost and winnings the same as the kayak race.

In addition to the races, there is a free lazy river portion from the landing just south of the dam to the Hwy 74 landing, which is 2.4 miles. The department announced on July 3 that free floaters may also use the race route.

All participants should register at the Hwy 74 landing starting at 8 a.m. for accountability and sign a waiver prior to the start at 9 a.m. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Water rescue teams will be strategically placed throughout the route.

Participants will also need their own kayak or float as well someone to pick them up at the end. They are encouraged to bring sunscreen, drinking water to stay hydrated, and a floating dry bag or box for personal items.

Puckered Up Lemonade and Fat Man’s Kitchen will be on site.
