CORDOVA — A man is facing multiple criminal charges after allegedly stealing water from the county.
According to arrest warrants, 22-year-old Curtis Daniel Hicks used stolen water meters at a property on Gattis Street in Cordova to get water after service had already been disconnected.
Two of the meters were allegedly stolen from the county and another from the city of Rockingham. The two from the county are valued at $170 each and the one from the city is valued at $350, according to warrants.
All three, according to warrants, each sustained more than $200 in damage.
Hicks is also accused of conspiring with another man to defraud the county.
(Note: The RO could find no record of the alleged co-conspirator being charged in this case, so has chosen not to reveal his name, which is publicly available on the warrant.)
The incident allegedly happened in October.
Warrants for Hicks’ arrest were issued on Dec. 7 and 9, and he was arrested Dec. 22 and booked into the Richmond County Jail on the following charges: felony conspiracy; obtaining property by false pretenses; and three misdemeanor counts each of reconnecting a utility, larceny, injury to personal property and possession of stolen goods or property.
Hicks is being held on a $25,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 9.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Hicks was first convicted in 2022 on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and wanton injury to personal property.
Hicks was also convicted in 2023 of felony breaking and entering.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
