SOUTHERN PINES — Starting the new year with its second meet of the season, the Richmond Senior High School boys’ indoor track and field team competed at Pinecrest High School over the weekend.

The Raiders were one of 11 teams to participate in the non-conference Patriot Polar Bear Meet hosted by Pinecrest High School last Friday.

While no overall team scores were kept, Richmond found success in several events, including two first-place finishes. The Raiders totaled eight other top-five results as a team.

Senior Keonta Pegues and sophomore Ty Covington were responsible for the two wins, both in sprinting events.

Pegues won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.58 seconds and Covington won the 300-meter dash (36.72 seconds).

Senior Tyrese Collins placed in the top-five of both events, taking second in the 300-meter dash behind Covington with a time of 36.78 seconds. He also crossed the finish line fifth in the open 55-meter (6.81 seconds).

Richmond had another second-place time and third-place finish, both coming in relay events. After posting a top-four national time a few weeks ago, the 4x200-meter relay team placed second only to Pinecrest with a time of 1:29.82.

The 4x400-meter relay team grabbed third place in the event, passing the baton in 4:12.82.

A trio of fourth-place results were earned in the 55-meter hurdles, the long jump and the shot put.

Junior Alijah Flowers ran the 55-meter hurdles in 8.96 seconds, freshman Damarion Allen landed at 16 feet, 10 inches in the long jump and junior Jeremiah Covington threw the shot put to a mark of 39 feet, 9 inches.

Rounding out the Raiders’ top-five finishes was freshman Kendule Williams. He was fifth in the long jump behind Allen, posting a distance of 16 feet, 2.5 inches.
