ROCKINGHAM — A small fire was sparked at Richmond Plaza early Saturday evening.
According to Rockingham Fire Department Assistant Chief Vernon McKinnon, a man was cutting beams at the site of the future Planet Fitness gym when tar paper near the front of the building caught fire.
McKinnon said the call was made quickly, which allowed crews to keep the damage to a minimum once they arrived on scene..
He said there was only slight smoke damage caused by the fire.
C.F. Smith Property Group, formerly Tri-City, Inc., announced the coming gym in November.
It will be located in the corner of the plaza that previously housed a movie theater.
Planet Fitness is scheduled to open mid-year.
