The General Henry William Harrington Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution proudly recognized Sherrell Reynolds Jackson with the DAR Women in American History Award on April 4, 2025.
Scott Waters accepted the award and medal on her behalf, honoring Jackson’s incredible legacy as a radio pioneer and community leader.
Jackson, who passed away on Sept. 9, 2024 at the age of 78, was a trailblazer in the radio industry. She became Richmond County’s first female radio personality in the 1970s, known as “Sunshine Sherrell” for her vibrant on-air presence at WKDX. In 1980, Jackson broke barriers as the first female station manager in the county, excelling in her leadership role while mentoring talent and strengthening community ties.
Jackson and her late husband, J.J. Jackson, launched Richmond County’s first commercial FM station, G104-FM, in 1991, devoted to Christian programming. Together, they broadcast inspirational music and local sports coverage for over 30 years, impacting countless lives through their ministry.
Regent Melissa Wall reflected on Jackson's achievements, stating, “Sherrell Jackson’s life and career exemplify the spirit of the DAR Women in American History Award. Her pioneering work in radio and her unwavering dedication to her community and faith leave a legacy that will inspire generations to come.”
Beyond her radio career, Jackson actively supported her community through initiatives like Relay for Life and the Richmond County National Day of Prayer. Her dedication to witnessing for Christ through pocket crosses touched lives far and wide, leaving a spiritual legacy cherished by many.
The General Henry William Harrington Chapter is honored to celebrate Jackson’s profound contributions to radio, her faith-driven mission, and her enduring influence on Richmond County and beyond.
