ROCKINGHAM — Investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office have filed additional charges against a woman accused of being involved in a financial fraud case.

Laura Gail Cox, 30, of Hamlet, is accused of creating fake checks and selling the financial information of the late John T. Grant Sr., who passed away in late 2023.

Cox also allegedly “made a false writing, that is apparently [sic] capable of effecting a fraud…”

The latest warrant — charging Cox with one felony count each of forgery, forgery of instrument and trafficking stolen identities — was issued July 29, and served on Sept. 4.

According to a magistrate’s order, Cox ran from the deputy who tried to serve the warrant and was in possession of a drug pipe, and was subsequently charged with one misdemeanor count each of resisting a public officer and possession of drug paraphernalia.

She was booked into the Richmond County Jail on a combined $16,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 18.

Cox was initially charged in the fraud case, accused of using a forged check for $35,853 — drawing money from Grant’s account — to buy a 2025 Toyota Camry from Griffin Toyota on April 9.

Her previous pending charges in the case include: one felony count each of uttering a forged endorsement, forgery of an instrument, and obtaining property by false pretenses from the Hamlet Police Department; and felony counts of obtaining property by false pretenses and identity theft, as well as a misdemeanor count of possession or manufacture of fraudulent identification from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Several others have been charged in the case, which is still under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
