HAMLET — Richmond County’s newest Dollar General Store is now open, though it’s a little different from the rest.
The new DG Market, on U.S. 74 Business east of Hamlet, “features an expanded selection of fresh meats, fruits and vegetables, as well as the same categories, brands and products customers trust Dollar General to carry,” according to a press release.
While the store is already in operation, a grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, March 15, starting at 8 a.m., with the first 50 customers receiving a $10 gift card and the first 100 customers getting a DG tote bag.
“We are excited to provide Hamlet residents with our new DG Market format and look forward to welcoming customers to our new location,” said Matthew Simonsen, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development.
“At Dollar General, we believe the addition of our new Hamlet store provides positive economic growth for the community through the creation of new jobs and career growth opportunities; increased accessibility to affordable products; the generation of tax revenue and access to Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants,” Simonsen added.
According to the press release, DG expects to employ 10-15 people “depending on the individual needs of the store.”
Schools, libraries and nonprofits within a 15-mile radius of the store are eligible for grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, which has awarded more than $254 million since 1993.
“We strive to provide a pleasant shopping experience to customers and looking forward to being a strong business partner and good neighbor,” said Simonsen.
The DG Market makes the third Dollar General in the Hamlet area. There is already one on the corner of N.C. 177 and Spring Street and another opened several years ago a few miles south at the corner of 177 and Airport Road.
There are also five in the Rockingham area and one each in Ellerbe and Norman.
