ROCKINGHAM — Taking a break from conference action Monday, the Richmond Senior High School volleyball team found its footing to get back in the win column.

Playing on their home court, the Lady Raiders stopped a two-match slide in their series finale against Montgomery Central High School.

Making the non-conference series sweep, Richmond defeated the Lady Timberwolves 3-0.

Dominating the match from start to finish, set scores in the victory were 25-11, 25-4 and 25-15.

The 21-point win in the second set was the team’s largest margin of victory this season. Helping break the set open was junior Kenley Smith, who went on a 17-point scoring streak from the service line.

The Lady Raiders also defeated Montgomery Central in straight sets in the first meeting between the two teams during the second week of the season.

“It was a really good team win tonight and we needed that to get back on track,” head coach Ashleigh Larsen said. “We talked before the game about things we needed to work on to prepare for later this week.

“Montgomery Central had some players out and they struggled a little bit. We were able to capitalize on that, especially during the second set with KG (Smith) serving.

“We made minimal errors tonight and we’re doing all the good things the right way leading into two really big conference matches,” she concluded.

Richmond (9-5, 2-2 Mid-South Conference) plays twice more this week, both against MSC teams. Up first will be a road trip to Pinecrest High School (7-10, 3-1 MSC) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

JV Lady Raiders outdo Montgomery Central

Ahead of the varsity team’s win Monday, the Richmond junior varsity volleyball team earned a sweep and also got back in the win column.

Hosting Montgomery Central, the JV Lady Raiders took the match 2-0. Set scores were 25-23 and 25-15.

Head coach Melissa Dennis called Monday’s victory a “big win,” which she hopes will give the team some momentum going into two more matches the rest of the week.

The JV Lady Raiders (7-7, 2-2 MSC) play at Pinecrest Tuesday and will start at 5 p.m.
