HAMLET — Dorothy East James, 94, of Hamlet, entered through the gates of Heaven on Friday, Nov. 12, 2021 at her residence. 

Dorothy, also known by many as “Mama Dot,” was born May 2, 1927 in Elizabethtown to Mr. Russell East and Mrs. Annie Neal East Thomas. She married Therbert Dewitt James Sr. on Sept. 12, 1947 and they were the proud parents of Therbert Dewitt James Jr. and Elmyra Wojcik. Because of their unwavering love, they also raised their two grandsons, Chris and Tommy James.  

She was always an ambassador for Christ. Throughout her life on Earth, she refused to ever put herself first, so for eternity in Heaven, she will receive all the righteous blessings that she so deserves. She was a charter and lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church in Hamlet.

With her zest for life, contagious wit and laughter, and mouth-watering cooking, she always left people wanting more.

She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Therbert Dewitt James Sr.; brother, David East; and sisters, Thelma Brooks and Ann Croom.

She is survived by her son, Therbert Dewitt James Jr. (Beth) of Ellerbe; daughter, Elmyra Wojcik (Mike) of Hilton Head, South Carolina; grandchildren, Chris James (Sherrie) of Raleigh, Tommy James of New London, Cathy Bunch (Thomas) of Winterville, Nathan Quinn (Nicole) of Harrisburg, Matthew Wojcik (Jennifer) of Raleigh, Michele Gonzalez (Raymond) of Chaddsford, Pennsylvania, and Kevin Jackson of Wilmington; and great-grandchildren, Tyler, Dawson, Owen, Ben, Bowen, Dominic, Eva, Grayson, Tenley, Jackson, Parker, Alyana and Cassidy.

Visitation will be Monday, Nov. 15, 2021 at Harrington Funeral Home Chapel from 6-8 p.m.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Hamlet, with the Rev. Chris Lyerly and the Rev. Chris Thornton officiating. Interment will follow at Eastside Cemetery, Rockingham.

Her everlasting words to all are: “Remember to love and not hate.”
