EAST ROCKINGHAM – Late last week, East Rockingham Fire Department battled a structure fire off of Battley Dairy Road.

At 1:20 a.m. Friday morning, alarms were sounded for the structure located at 151 Lumbee Lane.

The structure, a single-story frame dwelling, was located on a dirt road off of Brandon Lane in a thick wooded area. Fire personnel and equipment were hampered by the narrow road.

According to sources at the scene, flames were heavy and could be seen from a good distance. And even with a quick response by emergency crews, the officials from ERFD considered the structure a total lost.

The American Red Cross was called and was able to assist the family of two adults and two children. According to a source, a motel room is usually provided to the family and other vouchers are provided to give the family assistance.

The fire was extinguished quickly, but crews were still on the scene for nearly four hours wetting hot spots and making sure no flare ups occurred afterward.

Cordova Fire Rescue and Richmond County Sheriff’s Office assisted ERFD. At this time, no cause had been determined.
