One local volunteer fire department is celebrating a half-century of service to its community this year.
The East Rockingham Fire Department is hosting a 50-year anniversary celebration from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, March 14 at its main station on Airport Road.
“This milestone event will recognize five decades of dedicated service to the citizens of East Rockingham and the surrounding areas,” reads a post on the department’s Facebook page.
The event will feature a historical display with photos, equipment and other items from the department’s five decades to “highlight the growth of the department, the evolution of fire service operations, and the proud legacy built by generations of firefighters;” as well as a special presentation to honor past and current members “whose commitment and sacrifices have helped shape the department over the last 50 years.”
Lunch and live music from the Luke Vuncannon Band will also be provided during the celebration.
ERFD opened a substation on Home Place Road in late 2023.
Last year, the department was awarded a new rating from the Office of the Chief Fire Marshal.
The event is open to the public and will provide “a wonderful opportunity to meet your local firefighters, learn more about the East Rockingham Fire Department, and celebrate alongside those who have served and supported the department over the years.”
Those interested in attending are encouraged to mark “going” or “interested” on the Facebook event page, which can be found on the department’s page.
“We sincerely hope you will join us as we honor the past, recognize the present, and look forward to the future of the East Rockingham Fire Department.”
