ROCKINGHAM — Aside from the triple-header races at Rockingham Speedway this weekend, there are several Easter events around the county.
Darren’s Voice will be hosting its second annual “Easter in the Park” on Saturday, April 19.
The event, held at East Rockingham Park, is geared toward children who have lost parents to fentanyl poisoning or opioid overdoses, according to Darren’s Voice founder Shelia Bostic. However, all families are welcome to attend.
“...some children have lost one, some both parents,” said Bostic.”These families need to know they are not alone, we have to come together and give support to each other.”
Easter in the park will feature games, prizes, hot dogs, chips and beverages, and the group will provide Easter baskets for the egg hunt, according to Bostic. There will also be appearances by the Easter Bunny and the Captain from Captain D’s Seafood.
The group will also have slightly used bikes, scooters and other items “for these families to take home to help their tomorrow be a little brighter,” Bostic said.
Bostic founded the organization in honor of her son, Darren Bostic, who died from fentanyl poisoning after taking what he thought was a percocet.
The event starts at noon, with the egg hunt beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Also on Saturday, Mount Olive Baptist Church is hosting an egg hunt from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and Sweet Haven Church has one starting at noon.
The town of Dobbins Heights will be hosting its annual egg hunt on Monday. The event starts at 10 a.m. at the community center with the hunt at 11 a.m. in the park.
