ROCKINGHAM —A Richmond County man is accused of using counterfeit currency to buy items at two locations in East Rockingham.
According to one warrant, 58-year-old Robert Nathanial Diggs used a fake $100 bill to buy a 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola and three packs of Seneca cigarettes from a convenience store on Airport Road, receiving $88.02 in change.
Diggs is also accused of using another counterfeit $100 bill to buy lighters and get the change back from the Family Dollar store nearby.
Both alleged incidents occurred on Feb. 7. One warrant was issued to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office that day, and Diggs was arrested. The second warrant was issued the following day.
Diggs is charged with two felony counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. He was booked into the Richmond County Jail where he is being held on a combined $1,500 secured bond. His first appearance was Feb. 9 and his next court date is Feb. 19.
Jail records show Diggs is also being held without bond on a parole violation.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Diggs was released from prison in July 2025 after serving more than a year from a 2024 conviction on charges of receiving or possessing a stolen vehicle and obtaining property by false pretenses. His parole is scheduled to end April 13.
Diggs is also a registered sex offender, having been convicted in 2002 of taking indecent liberties with a minor in Robeson County.

2002 - two counts each of forgery and uttering a forged instrument (Robeson)*
2005 - cheating property of services, driving while impaired, four counts of writing a worthless check (Richmond); misdemeanor larceny (Montgomery); driving while license revoked (Moore)
2006 - being a habitual felon, felony breaking and entering, nine counts of cheating property or services (Moore)

DAC records show Diggs has been convicted with his middle name spelled “Nathaniel” and has aliases of “Robert Dwyer” and “Road Dog.”
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
