ROCKINGHAM — After two weeks of negative results, Richmond County has its first confirmed case of COVID-19.

Health and Human Services Director Dr. Tommy Jarrell said in a Monday morning press release that the county was notified of the lab confirmation late Sunday.

“The Health Department will not release any details regarding the identity of the confirmed individual,” Jarrell said.

A map featured on CharlotteStories.com over the weekend showed Richmond County in white surrounded by a sea of red as cases continue to pop up in the Carolinas.

Information from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services has not yet been updated.

As of Sunday, there were more than 2,500 confirmed cases in 89 of the state’s 100 counties and the death toll had risen to 31. More than 40,000 North Carolinians have been tested.

Jarrell recommends Richmond County residents follow Gov. Roy Cooper’s stay-at-home order and, when out, practice social distancing by maintaining a six-foot distance between other individuals.
