First responders invite community to National Night Out at Richmond County Airport

ROCKINGHAM — All of Richmond County’s first responder agencies are teaming up for this year’s National Night Out event.

Although its roots date back to 1970, National Night Out was officially established in 1984 as “an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live,” according to the NNO website.

National Night Out is typically held the second Tuesday in August, however the local agencies are hosting their event Saturday, Aug. 9 from 6-9 p.m. at the Richmond County Airport.

Participating agencies include the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Rockingham and Hamlet police departments, as well as all municipal and volunteer fire and rescue agencies.

Youngsters will be able to get an up-close look at various vehicles with the touch-a-truck portion of the event. Other activities include bounce houses, face painting and a DJ.

There will also be free hot dogs, as well as summer treats from Puckered Up Lemonade and Duna’s Iceway.

The fire departments of Rockingham, Hamlet, East Rockingham and Cordova held a school supply drive earlier in the summer, and those supplies will be distributed during National Night Out.

The event is free and open to the public.
