ASHEBORO — A wealth of scoring Wednesday helped the Richmond Senior High School boys’ soccer team remain in the win column.
Collecting their second straight victory for the first time this season, the Raiders defeated Uwharrie Charter Academy 7-1.
The victory marked the end of Richmond’s non-conference slate, and was also a single-match season-high in goals scored this fall.
The match was played at the Zoo City Sportsplex, which is where Uwharrie Charter plays its home games.
Richmond scored four goals in the first half and added its final three goals in the second half.
Leading by as many as six goals, the Raiders allowed the Eagles lone tally in the final 40 minutes of play.
Scoring for the Raiders in the first half were senior Memphis Jacobs, junior Patrick Smith and senior DJ Gainey. Jacobs scored two goals, the first and third, followed by solo tallies from Smith and Gainey.
Junior Cole Lambeth made it 5-0 to start the second half. Richmond committed a foul in the box which led to a penalty kick goal for Uwharrie Charter to cut the Raiders’ lead to four goals.
Junior Kevin Diaz Lopez, who scored Richmond’s lone goal in Monday’s win, recorded the final two goals for the Raiders. Through two matches this week, he’s netted three goals.
Playing the first half in net was junior Eric Legrand and senior goalkeeper Camden Williams played the final 40 minutes.
“We talked about some things we wanted to correct in the second half in terms of spacing and some other things for next week,” head coach Chris Larsen said.
“I’m proud of the guys for how well they played tonight. This was a good game to get everyone playing time and have some fun before buckling down for conference.”
The Raiders (4-6-1) officially begin Mid-South Conference action with two matches next week. They’ll travel to Pine Forest High School (2-5-2) Monday and host Jack Britt High School (4-2-2) Wednesday. Both matches will be at 7 p.m.
JV Raiders also set to open conference Monday
The Richmond junior varsity soccer team didn’t play Wednesday due to Uwharrie Charter Academy not fielding a team this year.
The JV Raiders (6-4) are set to begin MSC action Monday and Wednesday against the JV Trojans and JV Buccaneers. Those matches are set for 5 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.
