ROCKINGHAM — Three Richmond County food pantries were among more than 300 to be awarded Nourishing Our Neighbors grants from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation.

Food Lion Feeds announced Dec. 5 that it awarded more than $985,000 to 318 of its “feeding partners” across the North Carolina-based grocery store chain’s 10-state operating area in its latest cycle.

Cordova United Methodist Church received a $3,000 grant for its food pantry.

“We are over-the-top excited for their support,” Martha Campbell, Food Ministry coordinator told the RO in an email, adding that this was the church’s fourth grant from Food Lion.

The other two local grant recipients are Our Daily Bread in downtown Rockingham and Zion Community Outreach, affiliated with Mount Zion United Church of Christ on Ledbetter Road. The amounts they received are unknown at the time of writing.

All three were awarded grants during the winter cycle of 2024, along with New Life Ministries.

During the spring/summer grant cycle earlier this year, Food Lion awarded: $3,600 each to United Way of Richmond County and Faith Assembly Outreach Ministries in Hamlet; and $3,000 each to Helping Hands of Hamlet and the Mineral Springs Improvement Council in Ellerbe.

In October, Food Lion awarded more than $2.6 million in grants to 120 organizations as part of its Summers Without Hunger campaign, including $8,000 to Kings Gate Church in Hamlet and $7,000 to the Mineral Springs Improvement Council.

Our Daily Bread previously received $2,600 in the spring of 2023 and was also one of 26 sites to be selected as part of Food Lion Feeds’ Great Pantry Makeover in 2022.

“Every community we serve is unique, but they share a common need: access to nourishing food,” Natasha Brinegar, president of Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation and vice president of Category Management, Meat and Seafood for Food Lion, said in a press release. “These Nourishing our Neighbors grants strengthen local organizations who know our communities best and make a meaningful difference in our neighbors’ lives each day.”

Food Lion recently remodeled all three locations in Richmond County — part of a $484 million upgrade to 153 stores in the greater Charlotte area.

The application deadline for the next cycle is March 13, 2026 and is available online. Those grants will be awarded next June.

To be eligible, nonprofit organizations must be affiliated with Feeding America or the United Way, and can apply every 12 months.
