'Scheduling conflict' results in Independence conceding

ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior High School girls’ tennis team didn’t have to make a single play Monday to advance in the state playoffs.

After qualifying for the NCHSAA 7A West dual team playoffs, the No. 17 Lady Raiders were scheduled to play No. 16 Independence High School in the first round.

But the match never happened, as Richmond was awarded the playoff win due to a forfeit.

James Johnson, Richmond’s athletic director, described the situation as a “scheduling conflict,” which ultimately led to Independence conceding the match.

According to the NCHSAA’s girls’ tennis webpage, Monday was the designated day for the first round of the state playoffs.

No. 17 Richmond will travel to No. 1 W.H. Page High School Wednesday for the second round. The Lady Raiders and Lady Pirates will begin at 4 p.m.
