FROM LEATHER TO LACE: Pence Place fundraiser changes from motorcycle ride to adult prom

Posted

ROCKINGHAM — Taylor Lingren is still raising money to buy Christmas presents for the young residents of Pence Place.

However, this year’s fundraiser will involve two feet instead of two wheels.

The adult prom “An Enchanted Night” will be held from 7 p.m.-until on Saturday, Sept. 13 at Axe to Grind in Hamlet.

Participants are encouraged to come “dressed in your best Enchanted Forest prom” attire and “dance the night away,” and vote for a prom king and queen.

The event will also include a silent auction and door prizes.

Lingren said Friday that there were still a few of the limited number of tickets available at $20 each.

The original fundraiser was a motorcycle ride, organized by Lingren in 2023 to restart a tradition by a now-disbanded motorcycle club her father was associated with.

The ride raised $3,700 in its first year and $1,500 in 2024. Last year’s gifts included new clothes, toys, soap, shampoo, body spray and bedding donated by J.M. Currie and Sons Hauling and Grading.

Affiliated with Monarch, Pence Place has been in operation for more than 30 years and serves children up to age 21 with intellectual and developmental disabilities and traumatic brain injury. Once they age out, the residents are either placed in Monarch-affiliated adult homes or with other organizations.

In 2022, Pence Place was only able to spend $75 per child, before receiving a donation from Mike Griffin.
